Last month, tomato prices in countries like Spain and the Netherlands were much higher than they were a year ago. However, the European Commission's tomato dashboard still shows negative numbers. This is because, in some instances, the current prices are lower than the average prices over the past five years.
According to statisticians, the average price for a kilo of loose tomatoes was €1.18 in the Netherlands and €0.89 in Spain, with both prices being lower than the five-year average.
In the Netherlands, vine tomatoes are priced at €1.48, which is 5% higher than the five-year average and 16% more than the price from a year ago. In Spain, vine tomatoes cost €0.99, which is 80% higher than the price in April 2024, but still 5% lower than the five-year average.
Cherry and specialty tomatoes consistently have the highest prices. In Italy, their average price is below the five-year average. However, in the Netherlands, the price per kilo is €3.50, which is 43% higher than the five-year average.
On average, €1.46 per kilo was paid for a kilo of tomatoes in April 2025.
