"Today, we could sell our table oranges at any price!"

It is a very clear market for Spanish table oranges as the season draws to a close. "We are focusing on our Summer Navel Extra Sweet LLUSAR variety, voted Flavor of the Year, which has exceptional taste quality, even at the end of the season, with its characteristic fragrance and sweetness," explains Benoît Maillard-Guillon of Ets Meseguer.

Very few operators on the market selling Spanish table oranges
The last weeks have been dynamic for the company, which is one of the few still offering variety in May. "A lot of people are still working on large-caliber juice oranges, but they have a very different sugar/acid ratio to table oranges, with a return of acidity that may be pleasant in juice, but is not particularly sought after in a table orange. Very few of us still have table oranges, so the demand is very high and our clients have few competitors." The market is also buoyant for the other Spanish citrus fruits still on sale at Meseguer. "We still have very good quality mandarins. Despite a sharp rise in prices compared to two weeks ago, the demand is still as strong as ever. When the quality is good, clients come back."

End of season: An opportunity to stand out
Finding the right balance at the end of the season is crucial for the importer. "It is always at the beginning and end of the season that you can stand out. It is a good opportunity to show that the quality of our citrus fruit is stable from start to finish, and that we can produce an excellent product with good shelf life even at the end of the season. This way, clients remember our brand for future campaigns. It is also important to find the right balance in terms of selling price. On the one hand, we have to make sure that the hard work put in by our growers in selecting the best grapes is rewarded, without selling them at ridiculous prices. Today, we could sell our oranges at any price because the demand is so strong. But we also have to remain reasonable so that our clients remember us next season."

Ets Meseguer will finish the Summer Navel Extra Sweet campaign around mid-July, followed shortly after by their South African Navels.
