The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) held its annual congress from May 8–10, 2025, in Mallorca, Spain, bringing together over 1,520 professionals from 73 countries. The event served as a platform for industry representatives to discuss market trends, production forecasts, and the challenges facing the nut and dried fruit sector.
During the congress, preliminary data indicated that global tree nut production for the 2025/26 season is expected to remain stable at approximately 6 million metric tons (kernel basis, except for pistachios, which are measured in-shell). Projections showed a 9% increase in macadamia production, a 6% rise in walnut output, and a 2% growth in almond production. Global peanut production is forecasted to grow by 2% to approximately 51.5 million metric tons (in-shell basis), while dried fruit production is expected to decline slightly by 2%, totaling around 3.2 million metric tons.
Industry representatives highlighted a range of ongoing challenges, including the impact of unpredictable weather on crop yields, price pressures, trade uncertainties, and tariffs. Discussions also addressed changing consumer preferences, with a growing demand for healthy, sustainable, and traceable products. Concerns over eco-conscious packaging and clean-label requirements were also raised.
The congress included the introduction of the INC Sustainability Certification, designed for member companies to demonstrate compliance with sustainability practices. This initiative aims to improve supply chain transparency and meet evolving consumer and retailer expectations for sustainable products.
The event featured a keynote speech by Toni Nadal, former coach of tennis player Rafa Nadal, who spoke on resilience and adaptability. The Nutrition Research Seminar presented scientific findings on the health benefits of nuts and dried fruits, while a legal panel on "Contracts and Consequences" discussed legal issues affecting the industry.
The INC recognized industry contributions during the event. Spanish retailer Mercadona received the Corporate Golden Nut Award for its role in promoting nut and dried fruit consumption. Restaurant Disfrutar was recognized for Excellence in Gastronomy, while Dr. David Baer of the USDA was awarded for Excellence in Research for his work in nutrition science.
The congress also marked a change in INC leadership, with Michael Waring of MWT Foods, Australia, stepping down as Chairman and Ashok Krishen of ofi, Singapore, taking over the role. In his introductory remarks, Krishen outlined three key focus areas for the INC: increasing global consumption of nuts and dried fruits, promoting their health benefits, and advancing sustainability in the sector.
The event concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to addressing industry challenges and exploring opportunities for sustainable growth in the nut and dried fruit market.
