Early spring accelerates potato planting in North Iceland

In North Iceland, favorable spring weather has expedited potato planting by nearly three weeks. Regions such as Skagafjörður and Húsavík have commenced planting earlier than usual. Kári Gunnarsson, an agricultural service representative, noted last week's early plowing in Skagafjörður, contrasting with last year's start in early June. "The soil is ready, and the weather has been good," Gunnarsson remarked.

In Húsavík, similar conditions have advanced municipal garden preparation. Trausti Aðalsteinsson, a foreman, observed increased local interest in potato planting. Initially wary of a delayed spring harvest, he recognized the favorable conditions. "The conditions were too good to wait," he commented, as planting progressed over the weekend.

Though last year's yield underwhelmed, both Gunnarsson and Aðalsteinsson project a more promising harvest this season. "When spring is this good, there's no reason to hesitate," Aðalsteinsson stated.
