Automated potato processing facility opens in Spain

Patatas Meléndez, a major fresh potato supplier in Spain, has developed a new post-harvest processing facility in Medina del Campo in partnership with New Zealand-based equipment manufacturer Wyma. The plant integrates automation, artificial intelligence, and digital monitoring technologies in a bid to improve efficiency, product handling, and traceability.

The facility includes 14 packaging lines and two automated washing lines. It uses AI-powered optical sorters to detect defects in real time and employs gentle handling systems designed to minimise damage during washing, drying, and sorting. Transport systems using water channels and soft conveyors are also part of the design, with an emphasis on reducing manual handling and improving workflow.

Packaging output has increased from 65 to 130 pallets per hour. The facility reports a 17% decrease in energy consumption and a 30% reduction in water use through recycling systems. These changes are part of a broader effort to address industry challenges around cost control, sustainability, and labour efficiency.

The project comes in response to long-standing difficulties in the sector, including fragmented infrastructure and cost pressures. Patatas Meléndez has sought to modernise its operations through automation and digital integration, to maintain product quality while reducing operating costs.

Wyma worked with Patatas Meléndez across multiple departments, including engineering and IT, to customise a solution. In addition to supplying core equipment, Wyma provided on-site support during installation and continues to assist with maintenance and technical services.

The Medina del Campo plant also includes data systems that provide real-time insights into operations. These tools are intended to support decision-making and allow adjustments across the supply chain, from field operations to packaging and distribution.

While the plant is currently focused on potatoes, the company has indicated it may explore new markets across Northern Europe and Asia in the future. The site was designed with additional capacity to accommodate potential expansion.

According to the company, this facility represents a shift in its approach to production and supply, with greater emphasis on automation and data integration. Patatas Meléndez continues to work with technology providers to explore further developments.
