New Jersey asparagus season begins strong

According to a report by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, New Jersey ranks in the top 10 states for the production of various crops. Data from the latest United States Department of Agriculture Census indicates that New Jersey holds the fourth position nationally in asparagus acreage, with nearly 810 hectares (2,000 acres) harvested.

In 2024, New Jersey's total vegetable production value reached nearly $225 million, marking a $16 million increase from the previous year. New Jersey's Assistant Secretary of Agriculture, Joe Atchison, visited Sheppard Farms in Cumberland County to mark the commencement of the Jersey Fresh produce season. During the visit, he harvested asparagus and toured the packing facilities at Eastern Fresh Growers, signifying the availability of locally grown produce in markets across the state.

Atchison noted, "The season is off to a great start as our early crops, such as asparagus, are available now." He added anticipation for the season's performance among farmers and those producing Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables. The Jersey Fresh label, according to Atchison, has been a part of New Jersey's agricultural identity for over four decades, representing local produce picked at peak freshness and supporting the state's economy.

Besides asparagus, other crops such as kale, lettuce, radishes, spinach, strawberries, and beets are now becoming available in New Jersey. Tom Sheppard, Eastern Fresh Growers' president, commented, "The asparagus season is off to a good start for us, and we expect to have a great season with our other crops as well." Sheppard Farms, a family business since 1683, has been situated in Cedarville since 1888, spanning 405 hectares (1,000 acres) and employing approximately 160 workers during peak season.

For the 2025 season, Sheppard Farms has allocated 101 hectares (250 acres) for sweet corn, 81 hectares (200 acres) for cucumbers, 65 hectares (160 acres) for bell peppers, 61 hectares (150 acres) for asparagus, 12 hectares (30 acres) for green squash, and 81 hectares (200 acres) for certified organic produce.

Incorporated in 1984, Eastern Fresh Growers serves as the post-harvest marketing segment of Sheppard Farms, featuring a 9,290 square-meter (100,000 square-foot) food safety optimized facility with temperature-controlled packing and pre-cooling areas. An ongoing project involves installing a solar field to power this facility, aiming for completion in the 2025 season.
