The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria is collaborating with the Plateau State Government to enhance Yakubu Gowon Airport, Jos, as an agro-cargo hub. This initiative aims to reshape Nigeria's agricultural export sector, responding to the annual loss of N3.5 trillion (US$ 2.34 billion) in food due to market and logistics challenges.
At the agreement signing at FAAN's Lagos headquarters, the partnership was described as an "economic independence" declaration for farmers. Under the agreement, the Plateau State Government will finance airport upgrades, while FAAN provides oversight and technical support.
This initiative aligns with the vision of Nigeria's $1 trillion economy by 2030. Stakeholders are urged to invest in infrastructure that connects Plateau's agricultural outputs to global markets.
Plateau State, with its fertile soils and well-suited climate, possesses unique agricultural potential. However, producers often struggle to access international markets. The state's collaboration with FAAN aims to unlock this potential.
Governor Mutfwang thanked President Tinubu for enabling this partnership and foresees the upgraded airport boosting local revenue and value. Highlighting Jos's commercial prospects, he mentioned hotel occupancy rates and Jos Main Market's reconstruction, anticipating Jos as a Northern Nigerian hub. The Plateau Commodities Marketing Company and the future dry port near the airport are positioned to enhance this development.
These developments are expected to stimulate regional economic activity and serve as a model for similar collaborations across Nigeria.
