Guadalupe Mora, the head of the locality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto ( a locality known as "La Ruana" in the municipality of Buenavista), stated that criminal groups continue to extort lemon producers in the region of Tierra Caliente, Michoacan. These criminal groups continue to demand a payment of two pesos per kilo of lemon to allow the product to be sold.
"They continue working, but the quota is still at two pesos per kilo of lemon. But they are working normally. (…) No, it hasn't ended", said Mora, confirming the shake down continues.
Mora also warned about the recurrent presence of explosive devices in the plots, allegedly launched by drones, which increases the risk for farmers. The community notifies local authorities, which in turn notify the Ministry of National Defence (Sedena), so they deactivate the explosives.
Given this situation and fearing new incidents involving explosives, producers maintain constant surveillance of orchards and dirt roads in the area.
