"We are shipping 200 containers of onions per week to Russia"

Al Solimania is an Egyptian company exporting fresh produce. After a difficult orange season that ended prematurely, the company is recovering thanks to strong Russian demand for onions while also preparing for the upcoming start of the table grape season. Zeinab Mohamed, export sales representative at Al Solimania, provides the details.

The exporter comments: "We're performing well with red onions to Russia, the destination of 99% of our onions this year. Russian demand is very high and stable, especially for the medium sizes in the 80+ mm range. Prices are more or less USD 300 FOB per tonne, and the campaign has been in full swing recently, as we are shipping 200 containers of onions per week to Russia."

"Russia has increased its onion imports this season by nearly 71.9% compared to last season. One contributing factor appears to be the competitive pricing of Egyptian onions. Additionally, Rosselkhoznadzor [Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision] head Sergei Dankvert has emphasized Russia's interest in diversifying its imports of fruits and vegetables from Egypt, particularly those that cannot be grown in Russia's climate. This strategy aligns with Russia's broader goal of securing stable, climate-resilient agricultural partnerships," she continues.

The exporter adds that she hopes to diversify her markets: " We would like to ship more onions to the European market, but it seems that our prices are a little too high. In any case, we have the availability to fulfill orders from Europe."

"The dynamic onion campaign is important and comes as we are just coming off a difficult orange season. I also want to announce the imminent start of our table grapes campaign, which we'll open with early white varieties," Zeinab concludes.
