New crop varieties at Hort Connections 2025

With Hort Connections 2025 approaching, Rijk Zwaan Australia has confirmed its participation in the annual horticultural event, which brings together growers, supply chain partners, and industry representatives from across the country.

As a family-owned vegetable seed company, Rijk Zwaan collaborates with Australian growers in the development and supply of vegetable varieties tailored to current and emerging challenges in horticulture. The development of a new vegetable variety typically spans six to sixteen years of research and breeding. The company's plant breeders aim to anticipate industry needs, focusing on improving yield, reducing input requirements, increasing disease resistance, and enhancing labour efficiencies and shelf life.

At Hort Connections 2025, Rijk Zwaan Australia will present several of its breeding outcomes and technologies, including:

ToBRFV-Resistant Tomato Varieties: These tomato varieties offer resistance to Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV), a growing concern in tomato production. The varieties are designed to help safeguard crop health and maintain produce quality.

Knox Trait for Lettuce: This trait helps delay the onset of oxidation in fresh-cut lettuce, addressing shelf-life concerns and food waste in retail and food service sectors.

Salanova Lettuce: A range of lettuce varieties designed for high yield and convenience, producing one-cut-ready leaves suited to pre-packaged salad markets.

Blue Leaf Cucumbers: A cucumber line featuring high chlorophyll levels, contributing to longer plant productivity and extended harvest periods.

Rijk Zwaan will also have regional representatives on-site to engage with growers and industry partners, offering information and support based on regional conditions and challenges. The event provides an opportunity for the company to share its latest developments while gaining insights from industry stakeholders.
