After the occupation of parts of southern regions, Ukraine's watermelon cultivation has realigned, with central and eastern areas now leading production, per Agronews. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food anticipates a harvest of 240,000 tons spanning 30,000 hectares of watermelons and melons.
Volodymyr Voyevodin from BASF LLC notes, "Poltava, Kyiv, Zakarpattia have successfully filled a part of the market and at the same time established the export of top-quality berries to Europe." Before the full-scale invasion, Ukraine was exporting melons abundantly to the EU, achieving nearly 36,000 tons in 2020.
The year 2024 reflects promising export developments, despite challenges from conflict-related impacts. Data from January-August 2024 indicates exports at 1.58 thousand tons, valued at $314 thousand. This marks a 39.5-fold increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023, when only 39.99 tons were exported.
The trajectory hints at further export potential, with Ukrainian producers potentially targeting Scandinavian and Central European countries, where fresh produce demand rises. Opportunities may also emerge in premium markets like organic and mini-watermelons, supported by steady demand. An industry expert suggests ongoing efforts could not only help reclaim pre-war positions but also expand market reach. In 2023, key export destinations comprised Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, making up 92% of total exports.
