Cherry sellers have been fined after a sharp spike in prices on All Souls' Day, officials confirmed. Vladimir Ivanov, head of the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets (SCSBT), told BNR and Sega that retail cherry prices jumped from 14 leva per kilogram to 20–22 leva within a day. In contrast, wholesale prices remained stable at around 8 leva per kilogram.
The investigation found that the price surge was largely caused by small market traders rather than major retail chains. According to Ivanov, the fines were not solely due to the price increase but were primarily issued for irregularities such as lacking proper documentation and failing to properly account for sales.
Ivanov emphasized that the sudden price hike was a result of seller behavior in response to holiday demand. He noted that larger retail chains maintained more stable pricing, with cherries selling for about 12 leva per kilogram.
